Biog
Jonathan Raisin studied music at Dartington College of Arts in the 1980’s and has had a wide and varied career since then, mostly based in Liverpool, working as composer, musician, community artist/educator, theatre practitioner, writer and project coordinator.
From 1995 to 2001, Jonathan was director of HUB, a company that he established with fellow composer Jamie McCarthy to explore music-led theatre/multi-media performance.
He has made work with major venues in Liverpool- Bluecoat, Unity and Everyman theatres, Philharmonic, FACT and more widely across the North West, with Manchester Jazz Festival, Light Up Lancaster and More Music Morecambe, on The Long Walk project.
In recent years Jonathan has devised a number of projects concerned with communities and place. The Rightful Owners of the Song (Liverpool Capital of Culture 2008 artists commission) was a year long engagement with a traditional singing community rooted in dock road pubs that culminated in a performance with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra and was the subject of a BBC2 Culture Show feature and interview.
Work made in collaboration with artist Elizabeth Willow as Raisin & Willow, has included theatre pieces, engagement residencies, exhibitions and books. This work is moving and engaging, creating a space for audiences to think and reflect. Sea Breeze (2013/14) was a project exploring the semi-derelict Winter gardens in Morecambe and was selected by Guardian critic Alfred Hickling as his no. 1 show of the year.
Jonathan continues to have an ongoing practice as a performing musician, working with bands, as a solo performer and as musician/composer for theatre/live film. From 2007- 2014, he was co-curator of the Liverpool live music/performance platform Lost Voices.
Recent performance work includes a duo with Philip Jeck and work with Merseyside Improvisors Orchestra, Latin American music group, Calfun.
